What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge, also known as a fixed partial denture, is a restoration option used to replace one missing tooth or multiple missing teeth in the same area. Using abutment teeth as the anchors for the restoration, a bridge essentially does just what its name suggests; it ‘bridges’ or fills in the gap left behind from missing teeth. It is shaped and coloured just like natural teeth. A dental bridge is permanent and cannot be removed and is a good alternative to when dental implants cannot be used or dentures.

Reasons for a Dental Bridge

  • Restores ability to chew properly
  • Reduces bite difficulties
  • Helps maintain facial shape
  • Restores speech and pronunciation caused by missing teeth
  • Fills in spaces of missing teeth that would otherwise leave surrounding teeth susceptible to tooth decay
  • Reduces risk of gum disease, since there’s a lowered risk when gaps are filled in
  • Prevents remaining teeth from shifting out of their correct positions
  • Restores the aesthetics of your smile and mouth
  • Is an upgrade from a removable partial denture to a permanent appliance

What is the Process of Getting a Dental Bridge?

First, the abutment teeth will be slightly reduced in size in order to accommodate the material that will be used to fabricate the bridge. After the abutment teeth are properly prepared, an impression is taken and sent off to the lab. It generally takes about 1-2 weeks to complete the finished bridge. In order to ensure that remaining teeth are protected while the permanent bridge is being constructed, as well as to ensure that the aesthetics of your mouth are maintained, a temporary bridge is made in the office and temporarily placed in your mouth while you wait. Once the permanent bridge is ready, you return to the office to have the temporary bridge removed and the final and permanent bridge cemented into place.
